Spanish (Español) 

At LEAP, Spanish is taught to all children in Key Stage 2 weekly. Our aim is for every child to leave primary school with a love of languages. By the end of year 6, children will be able to construct sentences about their lives orally and in writing. They will leave primary school with a strong understanding of the phonetic differences between English and Spanish which in turn will help with their pronunciation and spelling. Children will also learn about Hispanic culture from across the world, including dance, food and traditions. 

At LEAP, Spanish is taught in a fun and creative way. Children learn through doing, whether that be through song, rhymes, games or conversations in the target language with their peers. Learning Spanish is a key part of school life; children use their language skills throughout the day to ask for equipment in class or to ask for help. Cross-curricular learning takes place through our Geography curriculum where the children complete an investigation into the geography and culture of Spain in year 4. We are involved in CLIL teaching (Content and Language Integrated Learning) in the art curriculum, through which the children put their language learning to use in new and useful contexts. 

The Spanish curriculum is supported by the enrichment curriculum. All children in KS2 take part in our annual Hispanic Week which includes a range of cultural activities, as well as a trip to the Rio Cinema to see a film in Spanish. Throughout the year, children go on a variety of trips to support their knowledge of the Hispanic World. Last year, our Spanish ambassadors took part in a fantastic flamenco workshop at Sadler’s East with a professional dancer.
