Pupil Voice & Leadership

Pupil voice and Leadership roles

We pride ourselves at Grasmere as having strong pupil voice. Through our School Council, our mental health champions and our subject ambassadors, we have a whole- school commitment to listening to the views, wishes and experiences of all children in our school. We value the views of our children, from nursery to year 6.

School Council

Every year we hold School Council elections to find out who are new school councillors will be. Our school council is made up of two elected representatives from each class from years 1 to 6. School councillors bring the views expressed in class meetings to the sessions and feedback is given to the school’s senior leadership team. The ethos of the school council is to consider the views of all and to take steps to produce real change, for the better. We believe that our children can make a difference and are proud of the changes the school council has brought into our school

Here are some of the important jobs that our school councillors do:
  • Collect views of their classes and bring them to meetings
  • Inform the classes of topics discussed at meetings
  • Take an active part in meetings
  • Act as a role model for other children in the school
  • Take an active role in whole school projects

Every year the School Council visits the Houses of Parliament to learn about democracy. Whilst there they have an official tour where they learn about the democratic process and how laws and made. On this trip they explore the challenges and responsibilities that come with being an MP.

Here are some of the projects that Grasmere’s  School Council have been involved with recently:

School Lunches

The School Council has discussed the school lunch menu with our head chef Sergio.  They have given their input on the various dishes they enjoy and suggestions for things that could be improved about lunches and children's experience in the lunch hall.

Playground

The School Council play an important role in ensuring out playground environment is engaging and interactive for all of our pupils. We worked alongside our leadership team to reorganise resources and ensure games were fun for all.

Library

The School Council will be involved in a project to improve the school Library. We are keen to make the Library a lovely space where children can relax and read books that they enjoy.

Mental Health Champions

At Grasmere, the mental health champions play a vital role in promoting wellbeing and creating a supportive environment for everyone. The children have been trained to listen, raise awareness and help their peers understand the importance of mental health. They work closely with staff and Emma Fitzgerald (WAMHS) to lead initiatives and ensure that all children know where to find help when they need it. This year they’ve led whole school assemblies on mental health and delivered short workshops to classes teaching them about gratitude and breathing techniques.

The current Mental Health Champions are:

Amaia, Felix and Jowayne

Year 4

Subject Ambassadors

We are incredibly lucky at Grasmere to have such dedicated and passionate children! Each subject, from Maths and English, to Geography and Design and Technology, has its own subject ambassadors. These children are appointed because of their enthusiasm and passion for that particular area of the curriculum. The subject ambassadors use their voice in shaping the curriculum of their subject. They meet the subject leads  to discuss and evaluate how the curriculum is being taught. They are also involved in learning walks and the monitoring of their subject.
