Destination Reader
Across Year 4, 5 and Year 6, we teach the reading programme, Destination Reader. Designed by Hackney Learning Trust, the programme involves daily reading sessions incorporating whole class modelling prior to the children applying these skills through partner work and independent reading. Children deepen their understanding of the texts they read through the systematic use of a series of strategies and language stems.
Destination Reader teaches children learning behaviours for reading that support them to actively listen to others and reach greater depths of understanding from a text. It focuses on seven different learning behaviours: predicting, inferring, asking questions, evaluating, clarifying, making connections and summarising. The children are guided in developing their skills with the use of sentence stems and whole class, teacher-led discussion.
