Albert shortlisted for Belling Cookery Club top prize
We’re delighted to announce that our school has been shortlisted in a national competition with kitchen appliance retailer Belling as part of their Cookery Club initiative. Year 2 pupil Albert Quiney Schork’s artistic entry was deemed to be one of the best by the judges, and is now in the running to win brand new cooking appliances for the school.
The competition asked children from schools across the country to create art on the subject of healthy eating. Albert turned his own favourite healthy dinner into a Lego model to illustrate the importance of a balanced diet. His brilliantly inventive design beat hundreds of other entries from across the country to win a place in the top ten.
The competition will now go to a public vote, and the two top entries will be awarded £2,000 worth of Belling cookery appliances for their school. These will form part of a new cookery club facility, which would be used to teach children key kitchen skills.
We love cooking and we do lots of it, however, the facilities we currently have are not child-friendly and are located in the staff room. Because we share the facilities with staff, we are often limited as to when we can use the space. By running a cookery club with a designated area with our own appliances, we can use them whenever we want and timetable its use by different classes. If we had Belling cooking appliances, the children could contribute to the preparation of school dinners and create new recipes for people to try.
We feel the new facilities will complement our ongoing plan to encourage healthy habits in all aspects of school life: We are becoming a much healthier school. We have started to grow our own produce in our newly refurbished garden and plan to keep a regular rotation of seasonal vegetables that we can give to the school cook to use in the daily meals.
Congratulations to Albert on his fantastic achievement! You can see his entry and vote for his work on https://www.belling.co.uk/cookery-club-vote/grasmere-primary-school-hackney/ page. Voting closes on Friday 24th May 2019 at midnight, and the winners will be announced in June 2019.
